Art and spirituality have had a strong bond throughout human existence. Art inspired by spiritual concepts has addressed humanity’s most profound needs and life’s greatest mysteries. Works of art can help artists and viewers to achieve transcendence, which is an awareness of forces beyond the visible material world. Artists and viewers tend to look at art for contemplative, emotional and revelatory experiences that are similar to those provided by religion.
Art or painting is always about more than what the eye sees. We must look with the heart as well as the curious eye, if we are to understand, even a small part of what its creator intended. By emptying the mind of preconception or distraction, this cleared space can draw us into a state of transcendence.
Aisha’s work is regarded as being very spiritual as she tries to convey the presence of God within her paintings through creating luminosity (the light of God), by working large, which enables the viewer to immerse themselves into a state of contemplation, and by using Arabic calligraphy, she creates a visual dialogue of mysticism.
Aisha also refers to God as the ‘Sublime’ and her work creates a feeling that puts one in a state of awe.
